Transgender Day of Remembrance, 2012

Today is the day we remember all the trans people murdered in the last year. This year there are 61 names. This is the highest number of any year to date. I want to take a moment of silence to remember these people.

Goodbye, Katie

I want to give my heartfelt condolences to one of our writers on this website, Ava Gaul. Three days ago she lost her wife Katie, to suicide. As some of our writers have pointed out before, a person’s suicide not only affects those close to them, but entire communities. Despite not knowing Katie at all, […]

Taking A Short Break

Hey all, I’m taking a short break while I’m out of town for a few days. Posts will resume on Monday. In the meantime, keep submitting those posts! I’m hoping to see a nicely-sized queue when I return on the weekend. Thanks everyone for your patience and support! Thanks, Hanners Ellicott-Chatham, Creator, QueerMentalHealth.org

Pro-Anorexia Websites and Recovery

In a recent article in Time magazine, Maia Szalavitz suggests that “Pro-Ana” blogs and websites can actually help some anorexics. On the periphery of Szalavitz’s argument, I can agree with much that she says, however when it gets to the core, I have to disagree with the fundamental principles of what she is suggesting.

Thank You, Donors!

The fundraiser for my trip to New York to speak at the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center about transgender access to mental health care has come to a close, and we exceed our goal, thanks to the generous people who contributed donations. I’d like to recognize the following people for their donations:

I want to also give a very special thank you to Yael Cohen for her very large donation of $694, which helped complete our goal!

Other donators who did not wish their amount to be listed, but still recognized, include:

  • Bran Trudeau

And finally, thank you to all the anonymous donators out there who supported this trip!

Sincerely,
Hanners Ellicott-Chatham,

Help Hanners represent QMH.org in New York!

Hey everybody! I’ve been offered an opportunity to speak at an event at Callen-Lorde in NYC about trans and queer mental health. The flight from YVR to JFK is somewhat expensive, though, and as I am currently struggling with poverty, I’m asking people for a little help so I can make this trip. It would […]

New Articles 5 Days a Week!

Good news everyone! Queer Mental Health is now receiving enough submissions to be publishing 5 days a week! We’ll be launching the new schedule tomorrow. PS: Happy Canada Day to all our Canadian readers! Hanners Ellicott-Chatham Creator, QueerMentalHealth.org

A Face of Courage

In honor of Schizophrenia Awareness Day, QueerMentalHealth.org is going purple for the day. Thanks, Coda, for reminding us why this day is so important.

“I was schizophrenic, but we’re okay now.”

How many of you have heard that ‘joke’ before? And how many of you know how misinformed that ‘joke’ is? I was on a bus a while back, and overheard some young people making ‘schizophrenia’ jokes, saying things like, “Oh, that was my other personality. I have schizophrenia.” Unfortunately, this misconception is all too common. This is why I will wear purple on May 24th.

Happy Birthday, Queer Mental Health!

Wow, I can’t believe a whole year has passed already since I created Queer Mental Health. Thanks to the hard work by all our writers, this website has grown into a strong website with high-quality content. Did you know we’re getting hits from all over the world, even from countries where homosexuality and transsexuality are illegal […]

I’m back!

Hi readers (and writers), I apologize for my lengthy absence. As you know, the people who contribute to this website are people who live with mental health issues and/or mental illness. I am no exception. I live with bipolar II disorder, and in the last month, my moods have swung from a hypomanic high to […]
