Zopiclone Quick Facts

Zopiclone is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic typically used to treat insomnia. It is a controlled substance.

Primary Uses:

  • Insomnia
  • Poor sleep quality
Availability: 3.75mg and 7.5mg, oral tablets.
Contraindications: 
  • Alcoholism or Intoxication
  • Substance abuse
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Concurrent use of benzodiazepines or other anti-anxiety medication
  • Old age
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Impaired respiratory function
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Compromised liver function

Side Effects:

  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Impaired driving
  • Dry mouth
  • Disruption of REM sleep
  • Double vision
  • Drowsiness
  • Memory impairment
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

Withdrawal Effects:

Zopiclone should be tapered down slowly, or switched to Valium for tapering. Withdrawal effects can last up to two years otherwise. Zopiclone has a high risk for addiction, and is cross-tolerant with benzodiazepines.
