Happy 5th Birthday, QueerMentalHealth.org!

Wow, it’s been 5 years already since I created QueerMentalHealth.org!

Transgender Day of Remembrance, 2015

Another year has gone, and sadly, so have way too many people. Transgender Day of Rememberance is the day where we remember those who have lost their lives to transphobic hatred. Please take a moment to remember them, and to recognize that the vast majority of these victims were women of colour.

On “Family Values” and Mental Health

Family values is problematic, both on the right, and the left. Why? The simple answer is that it renders worthless the value of anyone who isn’t (heterosexual and) married with children. By placing families on that pedestal, it leaves everyone else at the bottom. The obvious demographic groups affected include those living in poverty, those who have addictions, people of colour, and single parents. But this also includes all working middle class (and even super-rich) who are single, who choose not to have children, or who choose not to marry.

QueerMentalHealth.org Needs to Move to Iceland

QueerMentalHealth.org is currently hosted on servers which reside in Canada. I am ready to migrate the website to a hosting company which is based in Iceland, a country which has some of the strictest privacy protections in the world. But QMH has never had a budget and does not receive donations (QMH is currently provided free hosting by one of our writers). In order to pay the costs for hosting, those funds must be raised. We need just under $200 to start an account with the new host, which would cover the first 3 years.

Technical Problems

Hi Readers, I’m sorry to say that we’re having technical problems right now, and won’t be able to post tomorrow’s scheduled post. I am hoping to resolve this quickly. Here’s hoping the latest article by Rhys will be up for Friday! Thanks for your patience, Hanners Blackthorne, Creator, QueerMentalHealth.org

Please welcome our new Editor — Starfish

The QueerMentalHealth team is growing. We’ve got lots of new writers joining us, and now, we have a new editor joining us as well. Starfish, who has been with us as a writer for some time, expressed their concern for the lack of maintenance on the website some time ago. They asked how they could be of help, and after discussing it, we decided they would make a great editor for the site.

Transgender Day of Remembrance, 2014

Trigger Warning: Violence, Transphobia

Today is the day where we take a moment to remember all the trans people murdered because of anti-trans bigotry. There are 78 names on the list this year, a horrifying number.

Welcome to our new Editor – Katie Bongiorno

I’m sure you’ve noticed a lack of articles being published for the last 6 months. Life has been hectic, especially with my wedding being planned. I’m now getting back into the swing of things though, and we’ll be seeing more articles going up. Good thing too, because there are a lot of submissions in the queue! (I want to thank all my writers for being so patient with me!)

Transgender Day Of Rememberance, 2013

Trigger Warning: Transphobia, Murder, Hate, Suicide

This is the time of year I dread. I wish we lived in a world where we didn’t need a day like the Transgender Day of Remembrance, but we do. And the numbers are staggering, growing each year. Not because more trans people are being murdered now than ever before (though that may also be the case), but because more victims are being recognized and identified as transgender, and more of these crimes are being reported and recognized as crimes.
